Mid-october in the BWCA...don't miss it!

Spent a few hours on Bass lake to Low lake yesterday and the leaf colors were still good, the waters were smooth as glass. I was the only one on the lake except for 2 young loons. They flapped their wings as I got close to them and wailed a bit as if to say "we're here for a few more days and then flying south."

The portage from the Echo Trail to Bass lake is about 270 rods, wide and easy to walk. Took about 15 minutes as I needed to stop to enjoy the colors and smell the Fall leaves.Used a Wenonah Canak. You should try this boat sometime. Easy to carry with a pedestal yoke, weighs 42 lbs, center sliding seat and has excellent glide. I used a kayak paddle. The Canak tracks fairly straight, easy to maneuver.

Have you canoed, kayaked or hike the BWCA this time of the year? There are less people, no bugs, the crisp air is so refreshing, the juncos (birds) will be skittering along the shoreline guiding you as you move, eagles and loons are still here. One does have to come prepared for a change in the weather. Bring hats, gloves, warm socks, jacket, and step gingerly at the portages trying to keep your feet dry.

Don't miss the BWCA this Fall

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is ablaze with Fall colors right now.  We drove the Echo Trail on a guided day trip to Hegman Lake and then east on the Fernberg Road to deliver canoes and kayaks this past weekend. The tree colors were fabulous with the contrast between the conifers, maples, birch, aspen and oaks.

Near the pictographs on Hegman we stopped to see pitcher plants, insect eating plants that look like water pitchers, growing in a bog. We were the only canoe on the lake...what a joy that was. My guest from Phoenix AZ commented that our day trip was the highlight of his visit. And no BUGS!

Spend time in and around the BWCA this time of year. You will not be disappointed.

Due to the lapse in federal government funding, the U.S. Forest, as with other federal agencies, is closed with the exception of certain essential services.

Bear activity report, Lake Two & Three, September 24, 2013

From September. 16 through today, the USFS has received some bear reports from Lakes Two and Three. They are not sure whether it is one bear or two. The activity has been from one of the campsites on the southern shore of Lake Two, to the western most campsite on the south shore of Lake Three, back to Lake Two at the site closest to the portage into Rifle lake. The bear is persistent and was successful in getting hold of food on at least one site.

Bear awareness*:
  • Keep a clean campsite. Never eat or store food in your tent
  • Take all precautions to discourage bears from visiting your site, including hanging your food pack or using a bear-resistant container, as well as garbage and anything that has a strong or sweet odor (soap, toothpaste, etc.).
  • Some bear overcome their fear of humans and approach campsites looking for food. This includes islands sites since bears are good swimmers.
  • If you do encounter a bear, most will be scared off if you make noise (shout, bang pots, or throw fist sized rocks at the bear, etc.).
  • A very persistent bear may be discouraged by spraying pepper spray into its eyes.

Spiny Waterfleas confirmed in Shagawa Lake, Ely MN

Spiny waterfleas, an invasive species, have been confirmed in Shagawa lake as reported by the Ely Echo newspaper September 14.

Here are a few notable points made in the article;

Samples were confirmed by the MN DNR. Spiny Waterflea is a small planktonic crustacean that competes with small fish for food of microscopic animal plankton. The waterflea is not eaten by small fish.

Rich Rezanka, DNR aquatic invasive species specialist said "It is critical for anglers to remove spiny waterfleas from all equipment because their eggs can live out of water for more than 12 hours and be transported to other waters." When populations are high, anglers can experience frustration with masses of spiny waterfleas clogging fishing and downrigging lines and other equipment

Burntside lake, upstream from Shagawa, was designated infested in 2010. Shagawa and Fall Lakes will now be added to the list of infested waters. There is the likelihood of infestation spread.

Due to the discovery of spiny waterfleas bait harvest for any purpose is prohibited in Shagawa and Fall lakes.

Be sure to remove all aquatic plants, zebra mussels, and other prohibited invasive species, drain water from all water equipment including bait containers, drain bilges and livewells by removing the drain plug before leaving the boat landing.

Basswood produces Big Fish

Like early Spring, the Fall is another time in the season for big pike to be caught. Justin C. caught this 44+ inch one on Basswood yesterday working the currents using a big sucker minnow. He did CPR on the fish...catch, photograph and released it to be caught another day. It was fun to hear him tell the story of how he saw a "log" come swimming near the bottom, how it hit the minnow and the fight a fish like this can provide. He also hooked into one that was even bigger, but it broke his line and swam away.

8 Reasons Why Spirit of the Wilderness Should Repair your Canoe?

Spirit of the Wilderness, Ely MN has been repairing and reconditioning canoes for customers, other outfitters and our own canoes for over 14 years.  Why use our services?

1. Repairs of all types
  • We work on many brands of canoes; Wenonah, Bell, Souris River, Mad River, Old Town and more.
  • Repairs include; cuts, tears, scrapes, holes, divots, reconditioning, applying skid plates, installing and/or replacing gunwales, seats, yokes and pads.
  • For the average canoeist, our reconditioning should last 5-8 years. How do we know? We see our previous work when customers return years later to show us their canoes. Our process works and the satisfaction of our customers is great to see.
2. Take time to prep
  • We use time proven methods in preparing your canoe and have consulted with each manufacturer for their recommendations and techniques.
  • Sanding to the correct level, cleaning with the right solvent, and applying resin coat at the optimum temperature is critical for a lasting performance.
3. Use the correct resin
  • Each brand of canoe is made with a specific resin.  We use the resin recommended by the manufacture for your canoe.
  • We carefully apply the resin to get a smooth, consistent coat without major drips.
4. No spar varnish
  • We do not use spar varnish...that's for wood!
  • A varnish gives a nice shine to the canoe, temporarily covers scratches, BUT most importantly wears off in a year or so of use.
5. Allow time for curing
  • After the appropriate resin is applied to the canoe, your reconditioned canoe is brought inside overnight to set-up and cure.
  • It is recommended your canoe be kept out of the water for 2-3 days to ensure the resin is completely cured or dry.
6. Final inspection
  • After the resin is applied and cures, we inspect your canoe.
  • We look, feel and remove any raised fibers and bumps that would interfere with a smooth glide when paddling.
7. Affordable and timely
  • Our quality work is affordable.
  • When you drop off your canoe for reconditioning or repair we provide an estimate of cost and set a time for completion.
  • If we locate or determine additional work is required after you drop off your canoe, we contact you for authorization before anything is done.
8. Your business is appreciated
  • We know you have a choice of who will recondition or repair your canoe. Earning your business every time is a key value for us.
  • You want to be proud of your canoe and we can help by doing quality work at an affordable rate.
  • Our reputation is important to us. We want you to be able to say..." I chose Spirit of the Wilderness because they do great work, treated me openly and fairly."
  • Lastly, you will hear a heartfelt "thank you" every time you choose Spirit of the Wilderness. Your business is appreciated!
This is how we would want to be treated.

Wolf encounter

While traveling North Grassy Road, off the Echo Trail, yesterday morning, I came across a dark colored wolf in the middle of the road. Rather thin but healthy looking. We both stopped and looked at each other, then into the low brush it went stopping about 30 feet in. I whistled as if calling my dog Luke...it turned and gave me one more look...then vanished.  What a site and opportunity. No photos were taken as this all lasted about 30-45 seconds.

SNF fire report - 8-31-13

The waterways, portages, and campsites of the South Arm of Knife Lake are now open to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) paddlers.

There are no campfire restrictions other than the usual ones: small fires only within FS grates and never left unattended.

This will be the last update until the Knife Lake Fire is declared out or another significant event occurs.

Current Fire Activity:
Knife Lake Fire: 188 acres. Fire is north of the South Arm of Knife and south of Amoeber Lake: Township 65, Range 6 West, Section 18. Fire managers have successfully suppressed a fire that was in an unsafe and inaccessible location by bringing it out to natural barriers. Containment is at 100%.

The Knife Lake Fire will be declared controlled when a band of ground 150 feet wide from the control line is mopped up.

To clarify yesterday’s update: the ten Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa fire fighters left the fire yesterday after providing three days of good hard work on the fire line. Other fire fighters were de-moped from the fire today.

Two fire fighters remain to continue mop-up and patrol of the line.

Fires now out:
• Disappointment Lake Fire: quarter acre, discovered Saturday evening, August 24, 2013. Declared out on 8/27/13.
• Sedative Lake Fire, north of Ima: Township 64, Range 7 West, Section 17. Reported at three tenths of an acre in size. Called out this morning

Fire ban restriction lifted - 8/30/13

The USFS just released this information:

The fire restriction order for the east side of the BWCA has been lifted.

The closure order for South Arm will be lifted at 7:00 p.m. August 30, 2013.  All campsites, portages, and waterways on the South Arm will be open at this time.

The area received about 2 inches of rain yesterday.

Superior National Forest Fire Update 8/29/13

Campfire restrictions for the Gunflint and portions of the Tofte Districts will go into effect after midnight tonight.

Fires will be allowed only between 7 p.m. and midnight in the restricted area.

The restrictions apply only to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and only to the eastern portions listed in the forest order.

Suppression was implemented in an efficient and effective manner using limited aerial and hand ignition along with other holding resources on the ground. A weather front passed through last night but did not produce any rain. Gusty winds tested control lines and they held well. At 1:00 p.m. today rain was beginning to fall on the fire.

Containment is at 60% and rising steadily. The South Arm of Knife closures of campsites, waterways, and portages are still in place.

Fires now out:
Disappointment Lake Fire: quarter acre, discovered Saturday evening, August 24, 2013. Declared out on 8/27/13.

•  Sedative Lake Fire, north of Ima: Township 64, Range 7 West, Section 17. Reported at three tenths of an acre in size. Called out this morning.

Resources: Sixteen fire fighters and four public safety staff on the Knife Lake Fire; two deHavilland Beaver floatplanes at the Ely Seaplane Base;

For a location map of the three fires, the South Arm of Knife Lake closure order, a closure map, fire restrictions order and map, and daily fire updates please see our website: www.fs.usda.gov/superior.

Superior National Forest Fire Update - 8/28/13

Ely, MN

Update August 28, 2013

CONTACT: Becca Manlove, Information Officer, West Zone, Superior National Forest, 218-365-2093; 218-343-3026.

A closure was put in place for the South Arm of Knife Lake yesterday which includes the waterway of the South Arm, twenty four campsites, and nine portages. All entry points into the BWCAW remain open.

The fire danger remains high. BWCAW visitors are asked to use extreme caution with campfires. Campfires are safest in the evening after 7:00 p.m. when temperatures cool, winds are usually lighter, and relative humidity increases. Drown fires and embers completely.

Current Fire Activity:
  • Knife Lake Fire: now at approximately 100 acres, fire is north of the South Arm of Knife and south of Amoeber Lake: Township 65, Range 6 West, Section 18. Fire fighters are taking full suppression actions and are pleased with the progress. Control lines are being created and are holding well. The smoke column may increase today due to the ignition of unburned fuel between the fire and the control lines. Containment is estimated at 40%.
  • Sedative Lake Fire, north of Ima: Township 64, Range 7 West, Section 17. Reported at three tenths of an acre in size and 60 % contained yesterday afternoon. A two person crew camped nearby and will be working it again today.
  • Contained and Controlled Fires: Disappointment Lake Fire: quarter acre, discovered Saturday evening, August 24, 2013. Declared out on 8/27/13.
Resources: Sixteen fire fighters and four public safety staff on the Knife Lake Fire; two staff on Sedative Fire; CL215 air tanker, small helicopter, and an air attack fixed wing stationed at Ely Tanker Base; two deHavilland Beaver float planes at the Ely Seaplane Base.

For a location map of the three fires, the South Arm of Knife Lake closure order, a closure map, and updates please see our website: www.fs.usda.gov/superior.

BWCA Bear report - Basswood lake area

Are you traveling the Basswood lake area soon? We received a bear encounter report from a guest staying on Lincoln Island. The bear came into their campsite but was scared away...nothing taken. This might be the same bear that has recently been visiting Washington Island. Take precautions when visiting this area.

Bear awareness
  • Keep a clean campsite. Never eat or store food in your tent
  • Take precautions to discourage bears from visiting your site, including hanging your food pack or using a bear-resistant container, as well as garbage and anything that has a strong or sweet odor (soap, toothpaste etc.)
  • Some bears overcome their fear of humans and approach campsites looking for food. This includes island sites since bears are good swimmers.
  • If you do encounter a bear, most will be scared off if you make noice (shout, bang pots, or throw fist-sized rocks at the bear, etc).
  • A very persistant bear may be discouraged by spraying pepper into its eyes
  • If you visit a campsite with bear skat...do not camp there. Find another site
  • If you can't tell the difference between bear skat and other feces, assume it is bear skat and move to another campsite.
Taken from USFS Boundary Waters Canoe Area Trip Planning Guide

Have you ever heard of this?

Two people catching the same fish on two different lures at the same time? Brad H from Wisconsin came into our shop to tell us about his 3 year old daughter fishing with her pink rod, pink reel that lights up when spun and a pink jig while his wife fished using a tiger-colored jig on the opposite side of their boat on Fall lake.

His daughter started reeling in her line because she caught a fish. Brad's wife started reeling in her line because of a fish. They both tugged on their line and see sawed back and forth pulling the fish from one side of the boat to the other.  Brad realized they were playing the same fish. Once brought up on one side of the boat, the small northern pike had two jigs in its mouth...a pink jig on one side of its mouth and a tiger-colored jig on the other side of its mouth.  Now that is one hungry pike. It is back in the water ready to be caught again.

Catch a Rainbow in the BWCA

Karen L. and Marty W. were traveling the Stuart River to Nina Moose/Portage River North route and caught a rainbow. I'm sure the pot-o-gold at the end of the rainbow was their week+ travels with so many fine memories from catching fish, almost losing their canoe blowing away in the night (luckily a group of scouts came to their rescue) and more.  Thanks Karen and Marty for sharing your photos.

Bass are hitting

Toss your top water lure into the weed beds and watch the lake explode! We have been receiving reports from numerous fisherman that working the top water in the weed beds is producing tail dancing bass. What a thrill. Lures that are hot right now include Hula Poppers, Jitterbugs, Pop-R, Skitter pops, Rebel Crawfish, Torpedos and more. Evening hours seem to be ideal.

Register your BWCA/Ely area fish, whether you kept or released it, at Spirit of the Wilderness Outfitters and Outdoor Store and we will enter you in the Ely Angler fishing contest. Furnish your name, address, fish photo and fish details (length, lake caught on, lure/bait used) and you might win a guided fishing trip for two. Send to: info@elycanoetrips.com

Ely flowers are blooming

Our Ely store garden is looking a lot better this year thanks to Zone 3 Gardens, a local gardening and landscape group. They came and planted in the spring, added wood chips along the curb and have revisited a number of times removing weeds and adding more plants. Right now we have many blooming plants and the bees are visiting and doing their job.

Relay for Life in Ely - August 9

Friday evening until Saturday morning Relay for Life organized a walk-a-thon in Whiteside Park in Ely. Many groups and families sponsored teams to walk through the night. We donated our time, screen tent, Coleman lanterns and more to the Ely JCs team. Luminaries with personal messages guided participants as they walked the 1/2 mile course. Songs were sung, neighbors met neighbors, new acquaintances were met.  What a great way to raise funds to support cancer research and see so many people turn out.

Moose Sighting in the BWCA

It is such a thrill to see a moose these days especially since the numbers are declining so quickly in Minnesota. Patricia Perone, a customer of Spirit of the Wilderness, stopped in and she told about a moose encounter near Island River entry point (#34) near Isabella Lake, as she and her partner were kayaking. They heard a large crash and stopped paddling to hear and see what was coming through the woods at them. A moose came rushing through the woods headed for the water...nothing was going to stop her! The flies were covering her back and biting her. She was determined to make it into the water for relief.

As this all unfolded, Patricia was quick enough to snap some action shots. Thank you Patricia for sharing your adventure. Great shots.

Waters are high in the BWCA

Lake One entry point water levels are up with the recent rains. When we picked up canoes yesterday it was clearly evident how high the water level was. Normally we would be seeing 2X the beach area.

Be prepared to use portages around any rapids as conditions may be hazardous. And always wear your life jacket whenever you are in your canoe, kayak or boat.

We always strongly recommend; do not run, shoot or go down any rapids with a kevlar or aluminum canoe. It's a bad way to buy a canoe if you damage one.

Wildlife spotted in the Ely Area

A number of sightings of wolves on the Fernberg Road and south along FS 377/Tomahawk RD toward Lake Isabella have been reported. Seems early morning has been the best times. One group reported seeing a radio collared wolf. If they also had subsequently seen a moose, bear and white tail deer they indicated their trip would have been complete and they would go home early. Well they did not and completed their 5-day BWCA trip starting a Moose Lake, over to Wind Lake onto Wind Bay, Hula Lake and ending at Wood Lake.  Great fishing, swatted some mosquitoes and are already planning next year's trip.

A moose sighting!
Great to report a moose sighting given all the news that the Minnesota moose population has been on a steep decline for the past 2-3 years. A group traveling along Island River, entry point 34, reported hearing a load crashing noise coming through the woods toward them. Waiting to see what it was...a moose came rushing out of the woods toward the water not caring what was in its way. It immediately immersed itself in the river until only its head was showing. Seems the bugs finally got the best of the moose.

Do you have a observance to report?  Send your story to info@elycanoetrips.com and we will post it on our blog.  If your story is published we will send you a Spirit of the Wilderness hat as a small thank you for your contribution.  Be sure to include your name, mailing address and email address so we can contact you.  As always, Spirit of the Wilderness is confidential with contact information and does not sell or provide names to anyone else.

Fishing report - July 21, 2013

South Kawishiwi River:
Crappies are biting on the Kawishiwi River! Use a blue & white Rapala #6 or #7 size tossing into 3-4 feet of water along the mud banks. A 2/5 oz 5 of diamonds spoon has also been working well.

Gabbro/Bald Eagle Lakes
Walleyes have been hitting on leeches in Gabbro in 18-20 feet of water using a spinner with a hammered nickle spinner ro a 1/4 oz jig working right off the bottom.

Spirit of the Wilderness is your one-stop BWCA outfitter and bait shop located on East Sheridan Street Ely, MN. Open 6 am - 9 pm daily. Yes...we have leeches!

Fishing report - July 13, 2013

If you are willing to do a bit of paddling for excellent walleye and bass fishing; travel out to Insula Lake. Enter the BWCA at Lake One, #30F, paddling through Lake One, Two Three, Four, Hudson and finally the 105 rod portage into Insula. The southern shore of Insula was affected by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire, but what a neat place to visit looking at the regeneration of ground cover and wildlife.

Move onto the northeastern section of the lake working the reefs and drop-offs with jigs and leeches. Bass are hitting on top water lures right in the weed beds. A father and son reported today catching 5-28+ inch walleyes, 3-4 lb bass and more. Pictures to follow when they are able to get email access.

Gabbro and Bald Eagle, entry #33, have been producing plenty of walleyes, bass and 30+ inch pike.An Ohio group reported catching a 38 inch pike that grabbed the lure, dove to the bottom and the fisherman dropped his rod in the excitement, grabbed the line and pulled the fish in hand over hand. What a great memory of fishing the BWCA.

There is still time to travel and fish the Boundary Waters this summer and into the fall. Permits are still available with some limitations for dates and entry points. Make lifetime memories this summer. Call Spirit of the Wilderness, Ely MN at 800-950-2709 for more details on fishing the BWCA, reserving your permit and outfitting needs

Leeches, night crawlers and more - July 7 2013 fishing report

Leeches and night crawlers are the hot bait right now on most lakes in the Ely area lakes and BWCA.

Lake Isabella, Gabbro, Bald Eagle have been giving up great walleyes. Drift in your canoe across 18 foot depths using a chartreuss jig with a leech or crawler in the morning hours. The web beds have been good for small bass action. Use a top water lure; skitter pop, hula popper, jitter bug etc.  Throw right into the weeds and retrieve your lure along with short jerks causing bubble and action to catch the fish attention.

Pick up your live bait at Spirit of the Wilderness, on east end of Sheridan Street, Ely MN. Open 6am-9pm daily. email: info@elycanoetrips.com or call 218-365-3149

More critters on the deck, Ely MN

Red Squirrel
Luke, our dog, chased this critter up the tree outside our Sheridan Street door. He finally jumped down and ran off with Luke chasing behind. Corben, one of our staff, commented that he has never seen Luke run so fast. The squirrel got away.

Interesting critters come visiting

A number of different moths have been showing themselves around our Ely building. Don't know what this means but each type of moth has been interesting to observe. This moth stayed around so our customers could have a good look and take photos.
Cecropia Silmoth, from Saturniidae family

BWCA Fishing Report - July 5, 2013

Bass are hitting on top water in the lily pads. Best time seems to be in the evening hours. Using jitterbugs, hula poppers, skitter pops have produced results.
Night crawlers and leeches are doing well when fishing for walleyes. Still 12-18 feet deep or in areas with a current are your best choices.

Shagawa and Basswood produced some large walleyes, bass and northerns this past week.

Here is a trifecta by Tommy Dowden of Indiana. Out fished his dad!

8 lb 8 oz on the left, 6 lb on right (Dads)

Kawishiwi Ranger District update - June 25, 2013

More campsites have been opened on Three, Horseshoe, Harbor, and the Wilders. This should be the last group of campsite openings for the Kawishiwi District.  116 campsites were affected by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire on the Kawishiwi and the Tofte Districts.  To date 18 sites remain closed in the Kawishiwi Ranger District.  These sites will remain closed for a rest period of 4-10 years.

     The maps will be updated on the Superior National Forest web page;
      http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/superior/home/?cid=stelprdb5341928#maps
·
      Bear activity
The USFS has received a few more bear reports:
o    S. Arm of Knife L (probably the same bear making its rounds). No aggressive action but quite persistent.
o   Basswood: especially around Washington Island. Also no aggressive action but very persistent.

Remember to keep your campsite clean, do not bring any food or toiletries into your tent, hang your food pack (12 feet up and at least 3 feet away from trunk of tree) away from your tent and main area of your campsite or use a bear resistant food container.

Entering & exiting the BWCA:
·         You are required to enter the BWCA on a specific date at a specific entry point as listed on your permit. Once you exit the wilderness your trip is done and you will need a new permit to re-enter. The USFS is hearing reports of people who camp on Disappointment or Lake One and other close-in lakes who are treating their sites like campgrounds—going into town or nearby resorts to shop or buy ice cream then paddling back out to their campsite. There are campgrounds and dispersed sites (Tofte, Snowbank, Triangle, Ojibway, Burntside, Bass L., etc.) if you are looking for that sort of experience.
